In the author's preface to the book he tells us that the text has been developed from lecture notes of a course that he has given to undergraduate engineers and this is evident in the structure and style adopted. In the first chapter we are introduced to the mathematics of wave propagation, some relevant units and some curiously chosen examples, including a short history of the standardisation of musical pitch. Chapter 2 introduces us to the concept of monopoles, dipoles and quadrupoles, before Chapter 3 takes us through Lighthill's theory of aerodynamic noise, which is the cornerstone on which much aeroacoustic analysis is based. Chapters 4 and 5 then take us through the application of this theory to the problem of jet noise.
