摘要

The title and overview of this book suggest that it covers both magnesium alloys and magnesium composites. However, it is the latter topic on which the text focuses. A brief introduction is given to monolithic magnesium alloy. There are some important omissions; for example, the production of primary magnesium is not discussed. This is important because the environmental benefits attributed to using magnesium can only be obtained if the metal itself is produced or recycled using a low-carbon route. Some applications of magnesium are mentioned, with notable omissions. For example, in aerospace the application of magnesium castings for helicopter gearboxes is not mentioned. Aviation authority restrictions, currently a major obstacle to wider use of magnesium in civilian aerospace, are also not discussed.
