This text of almost 1,000 pages covers an unusually wide range of topics (which on registration) is fully supported by Wiley Plus, 24/7 helpline. Wiley Plus is described as 'an online teaching and learning environment (which) integrates the entire digital text book with the most effective instructor and student resources to fit every learning style'. The authors, for their part, adopt a modernistic teaching approach in which they justify their own rational by asking 'why questions' and direct readers by setting 'learning objectives' at the start of every chapter. First up in Chapter 1 is: 'Why Study Materials Science and Engineering?' This is, of course, a rhetorical question, the answer to which may strike many as a truism. Why questions differ from 'learning objectives', both of which differ from 'concept checks', which appear at intervals throughout the text. The work includes many worked examples for which method and answers are given. Other teaching/learning initiatives include invitations to construct spreadsheets, intended to encourage students to set-up their own database in a retrievable form. 'Set design problems', mainly of a metallurgical/chemical nature also appear from time to time. All but two Chapters, the first and the last, contain (on average) thirty moderately challenging problems for readers to solve, but only a few answers to selected problems are given with the text.
