Key U.S. contractors say they are ready to produce a scaled-down polar-orbiting weather satellite, one carrying just enough sensors to sustain the accuracy of long-range weather forecasts, as recommended by a team of non-government experts to prevent a gap in American weather satellite coverage. NOAA would need to approve the plan, and Congress and the Obama administration would need to figure out how to pay for it.
