In November 2011 the Army successfully tested the Advanced Hypersonic Weapon (AHW), developed by Sandia National Labs. The test's objectives included demonstration and data collection of the vehicle's aerodynamic stability, aerothermodynamic heating, and guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) of the missile and glide vehicle in the hypersonic regime. The flight involved new maneuvers that keep the weapon on a highly depressed trajectory during ascent; postapogee, the vehicle pulled up after an initial descent through the atmosphere to capture its glide altitude, from which it glided to its target, skimming the atmosphere , over its long-range atmospheric approach.
