Motivated by the idea of 'hiding in plain sight,' the adaptive structures team in the Aerospace Systems Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory developed a folding-wing concept for perching of small autonomous vehicles. The vehicle folds its wings while perched to reduce visibility and decrease the likelihood of being dislodged. The team, with the University of Dayton Research Institute, generated control concepts for successful perching landings and demonstrated perching maneuvers in an indoor flight facility.
