The Ares I crew launch vehicle took one step closer to reality with NASA's recent award of contracts to Boeing for design support and production of the upper stage, and to Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (P&WR) to develop the J-2X Ares rocket engine that will power it. Ares I is the first of a new family of rockets that NASA will use to launch cargo and up to six astronauts into low earth orbit (LEO) or to the International Space Station as part of NASA's Constellation program. It comprises a 309-ft long two-stage, inline rocket configuration with the Orion crew exploration vehicle at the top.
