"The problem was we tried to be easyJet but with smaller aircraft."That was the frank assessment of Flybe's Chief Commercial Officer, Roy Kinnear, talking to aviation media at a press event earlier this year.The airline, which dates back to Jersey European Airlines formed in 1979, is still recovering from a period which saw it overextend itself with large orders for new E-Jets and ambitious plans to expand beyond the UK into Europe, taking on the might of Ryanair and easyJet. In parallel it had also hung onto unprofitable routes longer than necessary.The reality has seen this come crashing to Earth with the CEO, Christine Ourmieres-Widener, reporting this year another loss before tax of £19.2m for the airline in its latest annual results to March 2018, the sixth time in the past eight years, and up from £6.7m in the previous year.
