As I write this column, the events of Farnborough 2018 are fresh in my mind, albeit that by the time this is published the air show will be old news. I attended on all of the Trade Days except Monday and was struck by the different 'feel' of this year's show. While there were the usual (but no less welcome) announcements of sales of civil airliners, it felt as if this year's Show was all about the innovators and disrupters, presaging the emergence of hybrid, electric and autonomous air vehicles to provide inter-city air transport and personal air vehicles. Taken in parallel with the announcements of Government backing for Spaceports in Scotland and Cornwall, there was a tangible air of excitement which I haven't felt at Farnborough for some years. The announcement of the initial funding of Project Tempest and the formation of a consortium of defence companies and the UK MoD to explore the technologies for a new optionally-manned fighter aircraft programme was welcome and I look forward to seeing how the consortium grows to include companies and other nations to reach the critical mass needed to bring a new aircraft programme to fruition.
