There is a story, probably apocryphal, that a Boeing Executive, asked which engine company he liked to deal with, replied: "the one we not working with currently." Well it looks as though we now have had several problematic engines. However, unless there is a sudden lemming-like rush to buy Russian engines or wait for the Chinese to catch-up, there is no alternative to the global triumvirate of Rolls-Royce, GE and P&W. For once, Airbus and Boeing are in the same boat, waiting for somebody to fix their powerplants. In most of the current cases innovations in engine design and construction are causing the pain; all designed substantially to improve efficiency and to lower costs but which are likely immediately to impact on airline bottom lines.
