AEROSPACE: 100 years on - do you think Lord Trenchard would recognise the service today? ACM Sir Stephen Hillier: Yes I do. I think that what he would see in the RAF today is very much based on the principles, his vision if you like, when he formed the Royal Air Force. His vision was of air power being a decisive new form of warfare. He had a vision that the way to execute that new form of warfare was in an independent, unified service and he believed that new service required institutions, ethos and heritage, which was appropriate to its function. If he was to look 100 years on, he would see all of those things, air power being decisive in warfare within a unified and independent RAF that still with that recognisable heritage and culture, as well as institutions, physical as well as conceptual ones. I think what he would also see is an air force which continues to be at the cutting edge of technology in air and space. It is often easy to look back at the canvas and string aircraft of the First World War in a 21 st century way and go 'Oh gosh, look at those. How quaint'.
