While much attention has focused on UK spaceports and launch vehicles as being the 'final pieces' of Britain's dynamic space industry jigsaw - that now spans Mars rovers to neutral buoyancy training, Thales Alenia Space's investment in all-electric technology adds an additional significant part to this sector. Says Oliver: "In the UK we had some pieces of the jigsaw but now we have the full puzzle for electric propulsion. This not only has applications in lowering the cost of existing satellites markets but also potentially opens up brand new ones - such as VLEO Skimsats - that could have both commercial and defence applications, for low-cost, responsive satellites. "It's strategically important for the UK in space to be a leader in this area," stresses Oliver.
