摘要

We were delighted to welcome Prof Ian Poll, Emeritus Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Cranfield University and a RAeS Past President, on 3 October, to deliver the first of three lectures we arranged for 2018 on environmental issues.Professor Poll has been increasingly active in this field since retiring from full-time employment and is even busier than before retirement! This flags up the huge interest in this topic especially in the light of the recent pronouncements by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).Professor Poll outlined the challenge facing the aerospace industry from the generation of CO_2 as well as NO_x and contrails. He then reviewed who are the stakeholders and who could have the greatest impact on the problem. Once airlines had defined the number of passengers and the route length, then the aircraft's design had pretty much been fixed. Other constraints, such as aircraft wingspan, was set by airport design which, in most cases, were based on WW2 pattern airfields, and current air traffic management processes.
