The decorations are still up with mince pies yet to finish off and we had two splendid space firsts! New Horizons' fly by of the Ultima Thule 'snowman' and the Chang'e 4 'dark side' Moon landing represent two excellent examples of robotic space exploration. Christmas 2018 also brought memories of the Apollo 8 lunar orbital flight and the iconic 'Earthrise' photo - an event that, perhaps in retrospect had more lasting benefit than the entire programme, advertising the fact that Earth was a unique habitat in the Solar System: more on Apollo nearer the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 this summer.New Horizons was over a decade in coming and gave us one first in 2015 with superb pictures of Pluto. This was part of a long tradition of NASA deep space activity, illuminating and genuinely valuable scientifically driven events. Again, wonderful technical expertise in remote and autonomous control 6.5bn miles from the Earth and with a ten-hour time delay on signals reaching home. It is now off into the interstellar void but I suspect with some chance of further discoveries in the Kuiper Belt.
