Month after month aircraft manufacturers tell us their recent orders and aircraft deliveries, constantly vying with each other as to who can be the best. In July 2018 the two big boys in the industry delivered over 150 aircraft to nearly 100 customers. As it was roughly split 50/50, that means each of them were delivering, on average, 2.5 aircraft every day, no mean feat. But just how does the process work? In many ways there are similarities to buying a new car in that, after choosing the right model for your needs and giving it a test drive, you will be given a delivery date by which time all the necessary paperwork and finances need to be in place. However, in reality, it is merely this basis that is the same. At an average list price of $100m for a 737 or A320 the process is, not surprisingly, much more in depth and indeed could be said to start from early on in the construction process.
