One hundred years ago two pioneers climbed into a flimsy Vickers Vimy in Newfoundland, Canada, before taking off on an epic adventure to cross the Atlantic non-stop. With powered flight itself only 16 years old, imagine the trepidation of pitting yourselves and this early aircraft against 1,890nm of open, unwelcoming sea. Yet, despite progress in civil aviation and satphones, GPS and flight tracking websites, it is perhaps not understood by the genera public that, once out of range of land-based radar, airliners are effectively on their own over the ocean - single tubes of humanity that almost exist in a 'Schrodinger's aircraft' of inflight limbo - until they come into range of surveillance radars and can be seen again by ATC. Rigid separation procedures and defined tracks thus keep these aircraft safely apart - at the expense of airspace efficiencies. Yet these 'black holes' in ATM surveillance coverage over seas, oceans and remote areas were highlighted globally in 2014 with the disappearance of MH370 with 227 people aboard. This was a wake-up call for professionals, media and the wider public of the limits of ground-based surveillance, even in the digital, connected 21st century. Last month, though, saw the dawn of a new era with the switching on of Aerion. For the first time, aircraft equipped with ADS-B are now visible anywhere on the planet thanks to the unblinking eyes of satellite receivers in orbit. This has not only implications for enhanced safety but also allows more direct routing and reduced separation, packing more aircraft into the same airspace. What would Alcock and Brown, gritting their teeth in an open-cockpit biplane, have made of the fact that, 100 years later, their slow progress across the Atlantic might be monitored from space?
