Not surprisingly, the announcement from the MoD in late March, that it had decided to scrap the Air Support to Defence Operational Training (ASDOT) programme, came as a huge disappointment to the three bidding partnerships that put so much work in over the previous three years to attempt to provide the UK military with a next generation of combat air training.ASDOT did not necessarily fail at the last hurdle, it was more likely shot down in flames by the MoD on the basis that to provide what was needed was, in effect, considered unaffordable.First announced by the MoD in 2016, the ASDOT programme was designed to provide combat air support services for the RAF, Royal Navy, Army and Joint Forces Command. The initial start date value placed on the programme was £700m but the MoD also envisaged a surge requirement in around 2027 and that this would add a further £500m to the programme. All-in-all, the value of ASDOT was placed at around £1.25bn.
