In February this year, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) welcomed a host of European space industry VIPs at its rocket-testing site in Lampoldshausen. The reason for the high- profile gathering near this tiny village some 80km north of the German city of Stuttgart was an addition of a new test rig to the range of equipment run at DLR's Institute of Space Propulsion, the largest rocket engine test facility in Europe. The event marked not only an important expansion of the site, which has played a significant role in the development of European rocketry since the early 1960s, but also a milestone on the journey Stewards the maiden launch of Ariane 6, Europe's upcoming medium-heavy lift rocket.
