On 20 March Philip Rowles, VP Engineering of the Martin-Baker Aircraft Co (MB), came to the Brooklands Museum to lecture to members of the Weybridge Branch, and to a contingent of Air Training Corps cadets. The speaker had been inspired to take up aeronautics by his greatgrandfather who was an inspector with Sopwith at Kingston and by meeting a RAF pilot who had successfully ejected from a Harrier when the engine wound down on finals at 800ft. The MB Mk 9 seat was fired just one second before the aircraft impacted the ground.Irish immigrant and talented engineer, James Martin (later Sir James), started designing and building aircraft in 1929 at Denham, Middlesex. His friendship with his test pilot, Captain Valentine Baker, led to the formation of Martin-Baker Aircraft in 1934. Sadly, in the company's third aircraft, the MB3 fighter, Baker was killed in 1942 following an engine failure. James Martin was much affected by the loss of his friend and resolved to devise a means of escape from stricken aircraft. The company went on to build its innovative MB5 fighter, improved gun feeds and a canopy jettison arrangement for Spitfires and explosive barrage balloon cable cutters for bomber wings.
