On 8 May the National Aerospace Library (NAL) was presented by Alison and Carolyn Harper with a painting by the renowned aviation artist Freddy Stringer which formerly belonged to their late father Donald John Harper FRAeS (1923-2015).The painting which depicts a British Aerospace Sea Harrier V/STOL aircraft taking off from HMS Invincible using Ski Jump was originally painted in December 1979. Ski Jump was an inclined ramp developed in the mid-1970s to assist the launching of the Harrier V/STOL aircraft from confined areas (such as from the decks of aircraft carriers), the test ramp designed by Hawker Siddeley Aviation undergoing test trials at RAE Bedford during 1977-1979. At the time of its development Don Harper was very supportive of the Ski Jump programme in his roles as Director-General, Performance and Cost Analysis, Air Systems Controllerate, MoD (PE), 1972-77 and then successively Director-General Research C, MoD (PE), Controllerate of Establishments and Research, PE and Chief Scientist (RAF) MoD 1978-83 and therefore had a particular affinity with the subject of the painting.
