I was there! Well, at the end of a 250,000 mile television transmission in the early hours of the morning. So, 50 years ago, like millions of others, I saw the first step, those strange ghostly dancers in a very grey landscape. Only later did I come to appreciate the shabby nature of the political, corner-cutting drivers that helped to kill at least three brave men. But brave they all were! And so also were those men and women that followed in various launch vehicles, again sometimes dangerously flawed and compromised equipment. It still takes a rather special person to venture into the vacuum.These days, we are on the verge of paying a large chunk of change for a seat in a high-cost carrier. As Alan Shepard pioneered the short burst of down-range weightlessness, now almost anybody with the cash may soon board Virgin Galactic for a brief lob into space; albeit in a rather more sophisticated vehicle.
