With the UK planning to order further F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets from Lockheed Martin over the next few years, Belgium having decided to follow the UK, Netherlands and Italy in buying F-35s, the French Air Force and Navy continuing to receive deliveries of Rafale jets, Germany planning to replace its 90 Panavia Tornado jets with more Eurofighter Typhoons and Finland looking to replace its ageing fleet of Boeing F/A-18s, Western governments can hardly be accused of failing to modernise their fast jet fleets. The UK and, separately, Germany, France and Spain have also realised the importance of investing in sixth-generation jet fighter technology. To that end Germany, France and Spain signed a deal at the Paris Air Show that aims to jointly develop a sixth generation European fighter jet and air combat system known as the Future Air System (FCAS).
