Germany's newest airport, Berlin Brandenburg, is now set to open in October 2020 - some eight years after it was originally scheduled to open. The opening, originally set for June 2012, was delayed due to concerns over its safety systems and fire protection while the cost has ballooned to €7.3bn - three timesthe initial budget. Since then, the opening has been previously been scheduled for 2014, then 2016, before being postponed again. Offical construction of the airport - designed to replace three outdated Berlin airports of Tempelhof, Tegel and Schonefeld and improve long-haul connections, began in 2006.
