Delving back into the mid-1940s the narrative describes the early days of jet bomber design, culminating in the B-47 which, with its swept wings and podded jet engines, out-performed its nearest competitors, such as the North American B-45 and Martin B-48.However, the B-47 was not without its problems including difficult handling, lack of take-off thrust and limited range, which lead to substantial opposition within Strategic Air Command (SAC). The authors go on to describe how, despite its many problems, the aircraft was ordered into mass production in the face of a perceived strategic threat from the Soviet Union.
