The NATO AVT-245 Specialist Meeting on Future Rotorcraft Requirements, held in Prague last year, began with the premise that the majority of helicopters operated within the Alliance can trace their origins back as far as 50 years. The specialists' meeting were set three goals: to identify the roles and requirements for the next generation of military rotorcraft; to investigate relevant technologies and to assess their maturity and potential significance and, lastly, to provide direction for NATO relating to future rotorcraft technologies. Pat Collins, who works for the UK's Ministry of Defence at the Science Gateway to Helicopters Operating Centre, DE&S, chaired the meeting by illustrating the fact that a potential 'cliff edge' in capabilities would be reached in the 2030-2040 timeframe without progress into newer capabilities. Collins said that four general themes should be addressed: helicopter programmes, configuration requirements, regulations and technologies that were available or could be developed. Key to moving forward, he suggested, was to "identify progress blockers and identify drivers that shape future requirements."
