Like the proverbial London bus, you wait ages for one vertical reusable rocket landing - and then two turn up almost at once. Hot on the heels of the successful suborbital test flight of Blue Origin's New Shephard rocket on 23 November, was Space X's Falcon 9 first-stage launch and recovery on 21 January - a far more impressive and technologically significant milestone - given that this flight also put satellites into orbit. Indeed, as well as the significance of Space X's achievement in returning a first-stage rocket - a step towards drastically cutting the costs of orbital access, these milestones show how 'new space' companies are driving technological innovation. But it is also worth sounding a note of caution to those who think that reusable rockets will automatically open up low-cost access to space. Forty four years ago last month, President Nixon approved the Space Shuttle system - which was partly sold on the basis that its operations would become almost airline-like in regularity with rapid turnarounds and a steady stream of willing customers wanting to put large payloads in orbit. However, the fragility of the Shuttle tiles and the Challenger disaster meant that it would never achieve these ambitious goals. Instead Europe's Ariane moved in to dominate the satellite launch market Today the spaceflight launcher landscape is much changed. Already there are signs that new entrants are shaking up the established order -witness AirbusDS and ULA's plans to incorporate reusable elements to their next rockets. Even the UK itself, sees a potential niche in building a spaceport for low-cost, satellite launches. While international co-operation is the name of the game on the ISS, this new space race that could conceivably one day help land humans on Mars is increasingly powered by private enterprise.
