On Wednesday, 6 November, more than 60 members of the Washington DC Branch met at the British Embassy to hear a discussion on a very current and topical subject entitled 'Touch Down and Mining an Asteroid'. We also welcomed a very distinguished former astronaut, 'Buzz' Aldrin, the second man to have stepped on the Moon, who came to offer his own thoughts. Following the opening reception, Wg Cdr Al Morrow RAF, from the Embassy Defence Staff, speaking on behalf of HE The Ambassador, welcomed everyone to the Embassy. He stressed the significance and timeliness of this evening's RAeS topic having regard to the, then anticipated, landing of a probe from the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft on a comet (see Comet rendezvous, pp 14 and 15). Ken Gazzola, our Chairman then introduced Frank Morring, Senior Space Editor, AW&ST, the panel moderator who, in turn, introduced our two speakers - Peter Marquez, VP, Planetary Resources, and Richard Kuhns, Manager of Lockheed Martin's OSIRIS Rex programme.
