It would take 400 patrol cratt, 200 frigates or up to five helicopters to conduct a basic search of an area of the same size of ocean in one hour. A single maritime patrol aircraft could do the same job in the same time, stated Air Marshal Phillip Sturley, RAF (Rtd), during his keynote speech at a Search and Rescue conference held in Brighton during May. As a country heavily reliant on maritime trade, the UK also shoulders the added responsibility for the provision of search and rescue out to longitude 30 west in the Atlantic, to a southern latitude down to the Bay of Biscay, as well as a line north of the Shetland Islands.
