摘要

It seems like another world now, that black and white footage of Famborough in 1952 with bodies and wreckage sprawled and black smoke rising. Yet in the terrible events at Shoreham, in which 11 people lost their lives on a sunny afternoon outside the air show boundary, reminds us of the inherent risks in display flying, that, with careful planning can be minimised and reduced, cannot be eliminated entirely. Certainly, for 63 years, the display regulations in the UK have led the world in providing a 'gold standard' for safety at air shows and protecting the public. But, as Shoreham graphically shows, not every eventuality can be foreseen. In these safety conscious times, it is natural then, that the media spotlight has been turned on the small and tightly-knit world of display flying.
