Ajaz was born in Delhi, India, on 9 June 1928. His father, Dr Syed Akhtar Ali, died when he was only a year old and his mother remarried, so Ajaz was brought up, along with six other step-brothers and sisters, with the support of his stepfather. He studied at the Delhi Polytechnic, obtained his higher secondary certificate with merit and joined Indian National Airways as an apprentice in 1946. On completion he joined Orient Airways. When Pakistan came into being in August 1947, Orient Airways moved its base from Calcutta to Karachi and assumed the role of the first flag carrier of Pakistan.
