Not so long ago it was thought that the ultimate cockpit environment would comprise simplified controls combined with a head-up display. What else could a military pilot possibly wish for? Voice activated controls? Night vision? That would be nice. But what if all that key information and imagery could be made available immediately in front of the pilot's field of vision, regardless of where he looked? What if he could look at a target and just say the word 'fire'? That particular vision is now an everyday reality but the revolution is only just starting. Total and immediate situa-tional awareness will keep the pilot safe and effective in an increasing age of robotic flying machines.
