In an era where procurement of front line air assets is becoming increasingly problematic in terms of affordability, there appears to be a growing interest in combat air platforms that can provide an effective defence capability at a fraction of the cost of more conventional fast-jets. As defence planners, in Europe in particular, struggle to maintain adequate numbers of combat types in front-line service, many now see a fundamental flaw in using sophisticated, thirsty, fourth-generation, ￡70m combat aircraft to fly low-level close air support missions in areas of conflict where there is only limited opposition and no immediate air threat.
