Speaking in front of a pristine, unpainted, Airbus A330-200, in the new Cobham FSTA conversion centre at Hum Bournemouth, Des Taylor, managing director Cobham Aviation Services, set the scene for this official opening event. "We see this new facility as the programmes maternity ward," he said. "In this case we will take a standard Airbus A330-200 from the Toulouse production line and give it the special modifications it needs, ready to be delivered fully fitted out and tested and ready for introduction into service." The first two aircraft in the Air Tanker fleet of 14 were converted in Spain at Getafe, Madrid, by Airbus Military, with a large contingent from Cobham working alongside their European partners over the past two years.
