Perhaps the biggest challenge facing the aviation industry is the environmental challenge -a multi faceted international issue which encompasses technology, procedures and regulation - covering everything from lighter materials to food-chain awareness of biofuels. In short, can the immense demand for air transport, which sees air traffic doubling every 15 years be squared with the need for sustainable growth? While aviation and fuel efficiency have gone hand in hand with the development of the jet engine, every sector of aerospace is now under scrutiny as to its environmental credentials. Fail to meet these challenges, and the industry will not only face restrictions from regulators and governments but it will also, as the lubricant in the global economy, retard the world's growth going forward.
