US carriers United Airlines and Continental have announced that they are to merge to create the world's largest airline. The new carrier, which will have a combined fleet of around 700 aircraft flying to 390 destinations, will be known as United Airlines operated by a holding company named United Continental Holdings. Both airlines reported losses for 2009 and are hoping that the merger will enable them to cut costs. While the merger has been welcomed by management and shareholders, airline employees have expressed concern that the new airline will cut staff in anrneffort to reduce costs.
