In an effort to rationalise military flying training across the three armed services, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has turned to the private sector to help supply its military aircrew training services. Named the UK Military Flying Training System (MFTS), the 25-year private finance initiative (PFI) is worth an estimated ￡6bn. The aim of MFTS is to provide comprehensive training to all new UK military aircrew across the Royal Navy, RAF, Royal Marines and Army Air Corps. The programme covers students in the period following their selection as aircrew up to the point when they are ready to fly in operational aircraft. Setting MFTS in motion has taken some time as the system was originally supposed to begin operations in April 2007. In August 2005, the MoD received bids from three industry consortia competing to become its training system partner. The teams were Sterling (owned by Thales with Boeing as a partner), Vector Flying Training Services (run by Bombardier, KBR and Lear Siegler Services supported by FlightSafety Services and Northrop Grumman) and Ascent (a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and VT Group). In November 2006, the Ascent consortium was selected as preferred bidder and, in June 2008, Ascent signed the MFTS contract with the MoD.
