How Green Is Your Contrail?

whether one accepts the eco-warrior view that global warming is a man-made affliction, or the eco-sceptic stance that it merely reflects a cyclical phenomenon that is going to occur regardless of human activity there can be no doubt that the worldwide pressure to clean up air travel has captured the publics attention and boosted the case for investment in greener technologies and operations. Even though it has been portrayed as the 'bad guy', the aerospace sector has probably done more to enhance its environmental credentials than any other industry in recent years but this message is not always well received or understood. The driving force for change within the civil aviation sector has come from two distinct directions. One is the realisation that fossil fuels are going to become less easy to obtain and therefore more expensive in the future, and the second is the need to minimise harmful emissions so that air traffic growth can be sustainable and politically acceptable in the years ahead. Both are closely linked and together they undoubtedly dictate how the aeroengine giants are planning their next generation products. Technology remains the key to sustaining a thriving global air transport sector and all the major engine companies are well advanced on projects that will lead to the next generation of cleaner, quieter more fuel efficient designs.
