Every year, an estimated 150 commercial aircraft are withdrawn from service. Over the next 20 years, this figure is expected to rise to 300 aircraft a year. Currently, many aircraft are stored in desert locations, abandoned at airports or dismantled with little regard for environmental or safety regulations. Compared to the transport sector as a whole, the problem of aircraft disposal is relatively small. By weight, aircraft only account for around 1% of transport infrastructure, with road and shipping taking up the remaining 99%. As part of the aerospace industry's move to becoming more environmentally responsible, both Boeing and Airbus have been looking at ways to reduce the environmental impact of end-of-life aircraft. A number of issues are being tackled, the first being that of second-hand parts. When an aircraft is dismantled, some of its more high-value components, such as engines or undercarriage, can be reused on other aircraft. However, when reusing parts, it is essential to have a monitoring system in place to document the history of each part to avoid the safety risks of substandard parts being fitted to other aircraft.
