In December 2008 the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), in partnership with Boeing, launched a kit plane building project for schools. The Schools Build-a-Plane Challenge aims to provide young people in UK secondary schools with the opportunity to build a light aircraft, giving pupils the chance to experience the practicalities of aircraft construction. In addition, participants will gain an understanding of the scientific and engineering principles behind flight, project management, problem-solving, team work and communication, plus the opportunity of taking a flight in the aircraft once it is complete.
