In this special issue we take a fresh look at how Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) have transformed warfighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and are set fair to continue their onward progress into new areas of activity. A measure of this expansion is reflected in the way we now refer to this technology. UAVs evolved to encompass Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs), both of which in turn have become elements in Unmanned Air Systems (UAS), the latter incorporating platforms, sensors, ground control stations and associated systems and infrastructure. The nano-end of the micro-UAV market now includes, as we report, remarkable flying insect-size devices that might soon be capable of spying in the most confined indoor spaces.
