Reducing the environmental impact of future air transport was one of the major themes of the Berlin Air Show, held on 27 May - 1 June at the Berlin-Schonefeld airport. Experts from Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, Mitsubishi, MTU, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce and also from German and international research institutions discussed the required technologies during the Greener Skies Ahead conference. While Airbus as well as Boeing in co-operation with Diamond Aircraft presented an emission-free fuel cell system, Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney/ MTU are investigating whether the open rotor or the geared turbofan (GTF) will be the first choice for aircraft engines in the future. While these competing engine manufacturers spoke in a friendly way about their different views, elsewhere at the show the former partners Diamond and Thielert Aero Engines (TAE) verbally attacked each other right from the beginning of the show.
