As the 787 Dreamliner has been designed entirely using the latest Catia CAD/CAM systems, the opportunity has been taken to exploit this virtual technology by introducing a new tool for the use of customers deciding the layout of passenger accommodation (LOPA) aboard the aircraft. A major departure with the 787 programme for Boeing has been the increase in standardisation of customer specified cabin fittings to reduce the effort required to finalise the interior design. With cost and timescale benefits and reduced risk, the reduction in supplier options is regarded as a highly positive move. Boeing has preselected a wide range of different cabin fittings and has incorporated them into a database that is fully integrated with the 787's Catia 3D design system.
