A great sigh of relief was almost audible on 9 August when the Space Shuttle touched down at Edwards Air Force Base in California after completing its successful mission to the International Space Station and carrying out in-orbit repairs. Yet the celebrations were curiously subdued and there is a distinct undercurrent of uncertainty about the Shuttle's future that this mission was supposed to have thrown off. It is no longer business as usual. However well the in-orbit tile inspection worked, the fact of the matter is that, after all the redesign work, new procedures and careful planning in the wake of the Columbia accident, a similar piece of foam detached and hit the Orbiter. There has been a sense that NASA needed to fly this mission — both for its own internal morale and for international prestige. However, now there is a definite sense that, if a replacement were available tomorrow, the Shuttle would be stood down immediately and retired to a musuem.
