摘要

Since the last Dubai Air Show at the end of 2003, the recovery in demand for air transport in the Middle East has continued. Carriers have placed large orders for new aircraft, investment has continued into airport expansions and several new operators have spring up. The Middle East aerospace industry differs from those in other regions of the world in that there are plenty of customers to purchase new equipment but, with the exception of Israel, relatively few suppliers. As each Middle East country differs in size, location and political outlook, it is difficult to compare like with like. Some countries are large enough to support a thriving air transport sector based mostly on internal demand while others rely more on international traffic. There are always exceptions to any rules but, as a rough generalisation, the growth in air traffic within different Arab states appears to vary in proportion to their openness and appeal to visitors from other countries. Regions such as Qatar or the UAE federation of states, which are perceived as friendly to western influences, have seen great growth in air traffic. Other more insular countries, such as Iran or US-occupied Iraq, have not.
