Within 48 hours of the devastating earthquake that struck the Kashmir region of Pakistan and India on 8 October the US military had five CH-47 Chinook helicopters and three UH-60 Blackhawks on the ground in Islamabad to help with search and rescue and relief for the hundreds of thousands trapped and dying in the rubble of hundreds of towns and villages in the region. Within a few days US Central Command had moved 20 Chinooks — rising to 24 — from bases in nearby Afghanistan and across the Pacific and on ships at sea to the stricken area in Kashmir. "General (John) Abizaid (commander of US CENTCOM) made the decision right from the start that this was the right thing to do for the people of Pakistan; a major priority," said Brig General Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of plans and policy, during a visit to London. "Pakistan is a strategic ally in the war against al Qaeda. We have deployed forces in Afghanistan and afloat..... We didn't consider cost. This was just the right thing to do."
