The Movimento Democrático de Moçambique (MDM) has been without a president since the death on 22 February of its figurehead, Beira mayor Daviz Simango. Its secretary general, José Manuel, meanwhile registered new statutes for the party on 6 April. But these had been drafted as early as 17 February, five days before the MDM founder died at the age of 57 in a South African hospital. According to the new statutes, all party decisions must be approved by vote. Manuel was however quick to begin restructuring the MDM. He said he was unable to hold the national congress because of health measures to counter the Covid-19 pandemic. The event, which is meant to designate the new MDM president, has been put on hold indefinitely, despite a decision by the party's national council to hold it in April.
