Preliminary hearings in Khalifa Haftar's three civil war-crimes trials in Virginia will take place this and next month. The Libyan National Army's lawyer is a longtime Trump backer, while opposing councils are close to the Democrats. Jesse Binnall, who since February has represented Khalifa Haftar in three war crimes lawsuits against him in the United States, is actively preparing his client's defense. The Virginia Federal Court will hold preliminary hearings on 21 July for two of the complaints - filed by Muna al-Suyid, whose father and three brothers were killed in Benghazi, and by a Canadian-Libyan national, Ali Abdalla Hamza. And the court has set 4 August as the date for a pretrial hearing in a third case, brought by relatives of Msaddek Tunalli, who died in a bombing in Tripoli in 2019. In a 12 July written answer to the latter complaint, Binnall set out the thrust of Haftar's defence.
