While Mahamat Idriss Déby, aka "Kaka", and the Transitional Military Council work on diplomatic openings to secure Chad's borders (AI, 17/09/21), N'Djamena has been keeping busy equipping the Chadian army. With a new "season" of rebel attacks likely to start in early 2022, defence minister Gen Daoud Yaya Brahim plans to double the army's numbers over the next year and to ramp up equipment acquisitions. In recent weeks, the army has received several dozen armoured vehicles from US-UAE manufacturer The Armored Group (TAG). These vehicles have been tailored to meet specific requirements detailed by the Chadian army, such as an additional forward-facing firing position on the passenger side of Toyota Land Cruiser 79 pickups. These are designed to be as mobile and resilient as possible to help the Chadian army in the probable event of a new rebel attack on the capital from the north.
