President Samia Suluhu Hassan is threatening to sack her transport and infrastructure minister Makame Mbarawa in a bid to bring the ministers already in place under her predecessor, John Magufuli, back into line. Mbarawa, who held the portfolios of communication, then transport, infrastructure and also water under the former president, is one of the few ministers from Magufuli's inner circle to have remained in government under Suluhu Hassan. After her investiture on 19 March, the head of state played on continuity by keeping on most of the people close to her predecessor, while launching a radically opposed foreign policy (AI, 05/04/21). She now intends to consolidate her position by permanently removing any recalcitrant ministers.
