The Zinder refinery in Niger that’srnsupplied by fields in the Agadamrnblock operated by the major ChinarnNational Petroleum Corp (CNPC),rnalmost ground came to a dramaticrnhalt in mid-September. Accordingrnto our sources at the oil ministry inrnNiamey, the oil pipeline carrying therncrude to the refinery (20,000 bpd)rnbecame totally clogged on Aug. 29 by an accumulation of wax over 1.8rnkm. It was only on Sept. 12, or 13rndays after the blockage occurred,rnthat CNPC finally managed to clearrnthe pipeline. As the refinery hadrnonly two weeks of reserves it wouldrnhave run out entirely had the problemrnnot been resolved. While thernplant didn’t shut down, productionrnon the fields supplying it had to be curtailed from the end of Augustrnand work only resumed in mid-rnSeptember.
